New Student Assesment System // Continuous Assessment
In Uganda, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)—led by the Ministry of Education and Sports—represents a major education reform that shifts the focus from rote memorization of facts to the acquisition of practical, real-world skills, critical thinking, and continuous project-based assessment. Unlike traditional models that emphasize recalling information, the CBC prioritizes what a student can actually do, applying knowledge in meaningful ways.
Core Goals of the Curriculum:-
Practical Skills: Learners are trained in hands-on abilities such as entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and vocational tasks that prepare them for both employment and self-reliance.
Critical Thinking: Students are encouraged to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems rather than simply repeat text.
Learner-Centered Teaching: The classroom dynamic shifts from long teacher lectures to active student participation, teamwork, and collaborative learning.
Classroom and Testing Changes:-
Project Work: Learners regularly complete practical projects that produce tangible results, reinforcing applied knowledge.
Continuous Assessment (CA): Instead of relying solely on one high-stakes final exam, schools progressively evaluate learners throughout the year. CA scores are compiled from classwork, projects, presentations, and participation, giving a holistic picture of student growth. These scores contribute significantly to the learner’s overall performance, reducing exam pressure and rewarding consistent effort.
Reduced Lecture Time: Lessons emphasize discussions, group activities, and presentations, creating an interactive environment that nurtures communication and collaboration.
Why Continuous Assessment Matters:-
Continuous Assessment (CA) scores are central to the CBC’s philosophy. They ensure that learning is measured as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. By tracking progress across multiple tasks and activities, CA provides a fairer, more comprehensive evaluation of each learner’s abilities. This system motivates students to stay engaged throughout the academic year, while teachers gain deeper insights into individual strengths and areas for improvement. Ultimately, CA scores make education more inclusive, practical, and aligned with real-world expectations.
